Lenovo ThinkPad 10 tablet early review: A good Windows tablet hybrid for mobile workers

by Patrick Pierra

Lenovo’s latest tablet may be a better Windows device for enterprises than the Surface Pro 3.

The ThinkPad 10 replaces the ThinkPad Tablet 2, a business-friendly device that TabTimes rated 4 out of 5 stars in 2013.

The new generation benefits from significant improvements. “Lenovo's new full-sized tablet seems to fix everything that was wrong with the prior effort”, writes Paul Thurrott from Supersite for Windows.

ZDnet’s James Kendrick is one of the first to have completed a review of the ThinkPad 10 and he likes it much. “It’s a full business tablet that is equally at home in the boardroom and the living room,” he writes, giving it a 9 out of 10 rating.

Two strong points:

  1. As a tablet, it’s a really good one. With a 1,920x1,200 10.1 inch screen, it’s thin (0.35in, 9mm), light (1.3lb, 600g) and powerful enough (1.6GHz Intel Atom “Bay Trail” Quad Core) to run Windows 8.1, but with a very decent battery life (up to 10 hours).
  2. As a hybrid, the optional --but almost mandatory-- Ultrabook Dock makes it a true laptop replacement. The dock has “the best keyboard I’ve used on any Windows hybrid, by a wide margin”, writes Kendrick.

At $599 for the tablet and $129 for the dock, the combination costs $728. This price point makes it an interesting option for organizations.

The ThinkPad 10 also benefits from some specific enterprise-friendly features. “The inclusion of a TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module), and options for fingerprint and SmartCard readers, make the ThinkPad 10 a viable option for the healthcare sector, law enforcement, and any other environments where data security and user validation are key requirements”, notes PC World Australia.
