The Canadian handset maker confirmed in a press release that it will advertise the operating system during the Super Bowl, and went onto refer to BlackBerry 10 as a “new mobile computing platform that will power the next generation of smartphones and tablets”.
The company didn’t expand on that point with any specific details, although previous reports have suggested that a larger BlackBerry tablet could be launched in the autumn of 2013. The tablet, apparently codenamed ‘Blackforest’, is thought to be 10-inch in size and come with 128GB of storage.
RIM will announce BB10 as well as the BlackBerry Z10 phone at the press conference tomorrow but despite this, analysts are unsure if BB10 will be enough to revive the flagging PlayBook maker.
“Despite the brief bump RIM will see from the launch of BB10, we expect its decline to continue longer term,” said Ovum chief telecoms analyst, Jan Dawson.
“Though the new platform should have significant appeal to existing users, we don’t expect it to win significant numbers of converts from other platforms.
“There is little in the new platform that suggests it will have the compelling apps, content stores, or the broader ecosystem that consumers have come to expect in a competitive smartphone platform.”
