RIM kills off 16GB PlayBook

June 7, 2012

“RIM will no longer be making the 16 GB model of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet”, said the company, in a statement to Engadget.

“The 16 GB PlayBook will continue to be available for distributors and retailers while quantities last. There is more value for our customers in the higher capacity models, and as such we have decided to focus our efforts here”

RIM has struggled to sell the PlayBook since its launch 16 months ago, but this move to ditch the 16GB edition could be seen as a bid to attract bigger revenues by pushing customers to the more expensive 32GB and 64GB models.

However, cynics may point out that RIM is already in something of a quandary, what with facing a $1 billion writedown on unsold products as well as the possibility of having to lay off up to 6,000 staff. The firm has also contracted two investment banks in an attempt to gain new investment, and so it may well be that RIM was advised to kill off the model bringing in the least amount of money.
