Apple still leads in market share but this doesn’t prevent ABI Research to crown Samsung as #1 in its latest ranking of tablet manufacturers.

ABI ranked vendors on several criteria for product implementation and vendor innovation.

Samsung was ranked first overall, for the second year in a row, among 23 tablet manufacturers. The Korean firm also comes first in the innovation category and second in the implementation strategy.

Apple is a close second to Samsung in the overall ranking. Apple trails Samsung in innovation but prevails for implementation.

Lenovo is a distant third. “The company has done a great job of expanding its tablet portfolio by marketing to a large audience range and providing unique user interfaces”, notes ABI Research.

The market share ranking tells a dramatically different story. In 2013, Apple shipped 45% of all tablets, Samsung shipped 23% and Amazon, 6.5%.

“Samsung and Apple maintain a strong lead over other vendors, but competition is heating up and the market could change drastically over the next year as price and value become stronger criteria for purchases,” says research analyst Stephanie Van Vactor.
