It’s a rugged device but not because its users are expected to work outside. The “rough” environment for this new tablet is the classroom.

The Galaxy Tab 4 Education, available now at $370, is a low to mid range device from a tech point of view. Here are some specs:

  • 10.1 inch screen with a 1280×800 resolution
  • 1.2 GHz quad core processor
  • runs Android 4.4 (kit Kat)
  • 16GB memory + 64GB microSD
  • battery life of 10 hours
  • rugged case, gorilla glass
  • 1.1 lbs (490g)
  • Wifi and NFC (near field communication)

Its edge is how easy it’s supposed to be to provision it in a school.

The Galaxy Tab 4 Education works with Google Play for Education, a web console allowing teachers to find apps and documents for their students.

As soon as one tablet is properly configured, one can push its settings and the list of selected apps to other devices via NFC by just tapping them.

After a future upgrade, teachers could also download –for an additional $30– the Samsung School console. This allows the teacher to manage, on their own tablet, interactions with their students’ tablets – like pushing them specific content during a class.
