Skytex takes on Google, readies two sub $300 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets

July 4, 2012

The tablets are 7-inches and 9.7-inches in size, with the smaller 7-inch SkyPad Gemini offering a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A-8 processor, 8GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM as well as a front-facing 2MP camera for $179. The tablet also boasts WiFi connectivity, a 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card slot, in addition to a pretty basic 800 x 480 resolution display.

However, if those specs don’t quite tempt you to part an extra $20 over the Nexus 7, which is after all sporting a better screen and a newer operating system in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, then Skytex is also launching the 9.7-inch SkyPad Protos tablet for $279.

This WiFi-connected tablet presents a 1024 x 768 resolution display, a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 8GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM, and dual-facing cameras (2MP on the front, 5MP on the back).

Both the Protos and the Gemini come with 5GB of cloud storage, and offer access to the 1Mobile Market app store, as well as HDMI 1.4 outputs which enable 3D playback on 3D-compatible TVs and PC monitors. Skytex says that the 7-inch Gemini has a battery life of up to six hours of continuous use, while the 9.7-inch Protos offers up to ten hours of 'web viewing'.
