Best New iPad Games: 'Final Fantasy VI,' action legend John Woo, and the return of a true iOS classic

by Mike Rougeau

February 7 2014

There are so many new iPad games to choose from, but a few stand out above the rest.

Update: I almost forgot to include The Wolf Among Us Episode 2: Smoke and Mirrors! OK, so I did forget. But now it's here on iOS, so don't forget to get it via in-app purchases inside the game itself.

Final Fantasy VI is undoubtedly the other biggest release of the week, and I'm personally excited to dive into this game, despite the wonky new sprites. Watch out for our review here as I explore its every epic corner.  Click through the slideshow below for more.

Also worth getting excited about is the long-awaited sequel Eliss Infinity, the follow-up to a true iOS classic. I included the first game in my list of iPhone-exclusive games to check out on iPad, but that was before the sequel was announced.

Also of note: the first action game from legendary film persona John Woo, Bloodstroke; the adorable-looking Rocket Robo; the addictive puzzle game Threes; the indie hit Dawn of the Plow; the Pokemon-without-the-Pokemon, Monster Battle Arena; and more!

The characters' dramatic performances are also highly rated, including the catastrophe occurring midway through, which delivers a particular emotional jolt to players. With plenty of abilities available and the magicite system for controlling spells/summoning, players can develop their characters any way they want. Inter-dimensional time-blob beasties have sailed the cosmos in pursuit of spare time, and now they've found it, tasted it, on an idyllic Monday morning. Assume the role of TERRY (toast-ejecting recoil & reload system), a humble and solitary toaster with an uncontrollable love for English breakfasts, hats and scheduling. Tap to launch toast, crumpets and magnitudes of other breakfast paraphernalia at the beasties. Bounce around and crush them with your hot metallic mass. Tip over bins, and use the environments to your advantage. Drink a little coffee and go a little crazy. Do everything it takes to defend toast time – you are Monday morning's final hope. Have your toast and eat it."
