Impressive, new and noteworthy: The 6 best business-oriented tablets of CES 2012

With well over 100 tablets of all shapes, sizes, purposes, and operating systems, CES 2012 was more tablet-oriented than even TabTimes expected. In an effort to boil things down a bit for the more professionally-inclined, we're picking six tablets as the best and most newsworthy from the show.
  • 1 Toshiba Excite X10
    Slide 1

We liked the X10—the follow-up to the company’s Thrive series—because at 0.3-inches thick, it’s the thinnest tablet device on the market today. At 1.2 pounds in weight, it’s also the lightest. And it somehow manages to keep its SD slot. The Excite X10 has a 1280 x 800 10-inch IPS display, a 1.2GHz OMAP 4430 CPU, and will run Android 3.2, with an Ice Cream Sandwich update coming shortly after its release at the end of this month.

  • 2 Lenovo Ideapad S2110
    Slide 2

We like the S110’s docking mechanism, which feels more like a cartridge than other hybrid tablets. The real star, however, is the ThinkPad-style keyboard, which maintains the brand’s fast, responsive style and double battery life to 18 hours. Other noticeable specifications: 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdrago CPU, 1280 x 800 display, HDMI and USB 2.0 ports, and Android’s 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. It will be available at the end of Q1 2012.

  • 3 Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7
    Slide 3

Samsung’s new small tablet wowed critics with a dazzling 1280x800 Super AMOLED Plus display, which has to be seen to be believed. It has two other interesting selling points: built-in Verizon 4G LTE connectivity and smartphone functionality, which allows you to make and receive phone calls on the device either via headset or the external speakers. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 will be available at the end of Q1 2012.

  • 4 Asus Eee Transformer Prime TF700T
    Slide 4

The dockable, speedy Transformer Prime made critics smile. This new iteration keeps the Tegra 3 and overall platform intact, but upgrades the display to an impressive-looking, first-of-its-class 1920 x 1200 pixels. It will run Android 4.0. The price of the Tf700T is $599 for the 32GB version, and $699 for the 64GB version. The release date: Q2 2012.

  • 5 ViewSonic 10pi
    Slide 5

ViewSonic appears to have learned from its past mistakes. The company’s professionally-oriented 10pi tablet has a nice-looking 10-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display and dual boots into Android 2.3 and Windows 7. The 10pi’s price is $849, and it will be available in Q2 2012.

  • 6 Samsung Galaxy Note
    Slide 6

The line between smartphone and tablet blurs with the Galaxy Note, in which Samsung brings tablet functionality and a highly functional stylus to the smartphone. With a 5.3-inch 1280 x 800 screen, this phone is huge. It will be available in the U.S. by the end of February. Samsung has not yet announced pricing for the device.
