Sticking it to Android: Tablet vendors worry about cheaper iPad mini

Citing “sources from tablet players”, Digitimes reports that Taiwan-based manufacturers are concerned that September’s launch could bring about an entry-level iPad mini or lead the firm to drop the price of its existing iPad mini in order to boost demand.

Researchers say that the current iPad mini’s bills of materials (BOM) is around $188, leaving Apple with plenty of room to discount in a bid to improve sales.

As such, Apple’s rivals are apparently concerned that a discounted iPad mini or a new low-cost model could impact Android and Windows 8 vendors and “even change the tablet ecosystem”.
