Surprise: Mozilla could be prepping budget Firefox tablet

May 28, 2013

Rumors on a Firefox tablet first emerged on Monday after the companies sent out press invites to an event on June 3.

The event is expected to see Mozilla announce Foxconn as the 19th partner to its Firefox OS alliance, although Taiwanese website Focus Taiwan claims that it could also see the debut of a tablet running the Firefox OS.

Although such a move would surprise many in the industry and potentially shake-up a tablet market dominated by iOS, Android and Windows 8, it could make sense for both companies.

After all, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Foxconn, the trading name of Hon Hai Precision Industry, has been “aggressively” looking for new clients in light of weakening iPad sales, while Mozilla could look to kick-on from unveiling two Firefox OS smartphones (Keon and Peak) at the Mobile World Congress in February.
