Tablet activations skyrocket on Christmas Day

Flurry’s analysis of iOS and Android devices for Christmas Day shows there was a whopping 17.4 million activations worldwide versus only 4 million all through December 1-20 — a one-day jump of 332%.

The one-day burst is a record across the device landscape as more iPhones, iPads, Kindle Fires, Galaxy Tabs and more.

During the same December 1-20 period far more smartphones (80%) were activated than tablets (20%), but tablets were the big winner Christmas Day, edging out smartphones 51% to 49%.

Of note, Flurry says the most popular activations were for Apple’s iPad (iPad and iPad mini) and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 7. Amazon’s latest Kindle Fire was apparently a very popular gift. Amazon’s tablet had the biggest jump, growing several thousand percent on Christmas over its baseline of activations the earlier 20-day period in December.

The company says because over 260,000 apps use its Flurry Analytics, it’s able to detect over 90% of all new iOS and Android device activations each day.

App download mania

Along with the growth in device activations, Flurry reported a surge in app downloads on Christmas. There was a whopping 328 million app downloads across iOS and Android devices on Christmas versus 155 million downloads for the twenty days earlier the same month, December 1-20.

Over the next week, up through New Year’s Day, app download rates will remain significantly elevated,” said Flurry’s Peter Farago in a blog post on its report.

“Flurry anticipates downloads to surpass more than 1.5 billion, and have a shot at breaking through the 2-billion download barrier for the first time ever,” he added.
