This report comes from consulting firm Analysys Mason which recently dived into app spending habits by conducting a survey of 2,000 consumers across the U.S. and Europe.
Publishing his findings on a company blog post, analyst Ronan de Renesse concluded that smartphone owners who also had a tablet would spent $6.50 a month on apps –- nearly three times as much as those without tablets. This spending increased even higher when respondents had an iPad or iPhone.
Furthermore, approximately 60% of tablet owners who had installed apps on their smartphone had paid for an app, compared to 40% of non-tablet owners.
The market researcher put these results down to tablet owners having a higher disposable income but also noted that smartphone app spend has been hindered by a few things, namely the availability of free apps, security concerns over their bank details and an inability to transfer paid applications to other platforms.
Indeed, such is the availability of free apps that 53% of smartphone respondents professed to having never bought a mobile app at the time of the survey, although Analysys Mason expects this to change as tablets become more commonplace.
