British government clamps down on espionage…by banning iPads

Citing people close to the heart of the issue, The Mail on Sunday reports that numerous iPads were used last week in a presentation by Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude, only for these to be removed at the end of the meeting by security staff.

It is believed that this is a precautionary move to guard against international spying, as The Telegraph adds that China, Pakistan, Russia and Iran all have Trojan viruses that can turn iPads into microphones and transmitters – thus increasing the likelihood of government secrets being found out.

Smartphones & tablets on collision course as bigger becomes the new better

Citing unidentified sources in the supply chain, news website Digitimes reports that panel makers are now seeing increased orders for 5-inch and 6-inch display panels – especially those with HD or Full HD resolutions – and separately adds that tablet vendors are also going large by looking at displays ranging from 6.5-inches to 21-inches.

As a result, the same observers believe that some China-based vendors could release 6.5-inch tablets with 3G modules later this year, which is poignant because it would mark the first time tablets have competed directly against larger phones (otherwise known as phablets).

Digitimes, which has a spotty record for making [...]

Lenovo teases new Yoga tablet with unique kickstand

Detailing the Yoga Tablet on Chinese micro blogging website Weibo recently, Lenovo’s head of China Chen Xudong claimed that the model will be the thinnest tablet on the market and said that it will feature Intel’s Bay Trail CPU and a battery that can last for up to eight hours when in video mode.

But in an intriguing twist, it appears that the tablet could also be fitted with a unique kickstand for improved portability.

Citing unidentified sources, Engadget reports that the tablet will have a unique “leg” that can “stand itself up”, as well as a mechanism to shift the tablet’s center of gravity.

The tablet is due to [...]

Surprise: Android VP Hugo Barra leaves Google for Chinese smartphone maker

All Things D broke the news of Barra’s departure and suggests that his decision to quit may have been influenced by on-goings in his personal life. The report detailed that Google co-founder Sergey Brin had split with his wife and is now in a relationship with a Google employee, who may have once been in a relationship with Barra (Valley Wag claims to have more details) .

Barra, who joined Google in 2008 and who often demoed the latest Android products at public events – including the second-generation Nexus 7 tablet just last month – later confirmed the news on his Google+ page.

UK supermarket Tesco to launch own-brand tablet

The Sunday Times writes that the tablet will come with books, films and music as well as apps for Tesco’s grocery and banking products, and Tesco’s own movie-streaming service Blinkbox.

Sources add that the tablet will likely be priced around £130 (approximately $204) in order to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire. Tesco has good reason for targeting Amazon and Apple, because both computing giants have had an adverse effect on Tesco’s profitable books and DVDs business in recent years.

Tesco is said to be the second largest retailer (behind Wal-Mart) in terms of profits and has over 6,000 stores worldwide, including in the United States [...]

Sign of the times: Tablets and smartphones now outselling PCs at Lenovo

Announcing the figures as part of its first quarter financial results on Thursday, the China-based vendor detailed how smartphone and tablet sales doubled year-on-year in the three months to June 30, with tablet sales on their own growing three-fold.

The New York Times reports that Lenovo’s smartphone sales doubled to 11.4 million with tablet sales reaching 1.5 million. The latter would tally with recent figures from analysts.

IDC believes that Lenovo is now the fourth-largest maker of smartphones worldwide and claimed earlier this week that the firm is now ahead of Microsoft and Amazon as one of the top five tablet vendors.

“Lenovo’s combined [...]

Google Play revenue is on the rise but still lags behind the App Store

Distimo found that Google Play revenue increased by 67% over the last six months, with the App Store’s growing by 15% over the same period.

Breaking buying habits down by country, the report detailed that the U.S. spends the most money on apps, followed by Japan and the South Korea. But in an interesting aside, researchers found that Russians were spending more money on apps for iPad than for iPhone.

This report comes less than two weeks after App Annie detailed its own findings into the competition between Google Play and the App Store.

The app analytics company found that Google Play app downloads topped App Store downloads for the first time in the [...]
