BlackBerry finds a $4.7 billion buyer, though remains open to other suitors

Today, the once-mighty smartphone maker announced it has signed a letter of intent to be acquired by a consortium led by Fairfax Financial Holdings in a deal worth approximately $4.7 billion. Fairfax currently owns about 10% of BlackBerry shares that it says it will contribute as part of its proosed deal. 

BlackBerry will review the deal over the next six weeks while a special commitee will also entertain other offers which may supercede the Fairfax offer. If no better offers surface, the Fairfax offer is expected to become definitive on November 4, 2013.

Microsoft says smaller Windows 8 tablets will launch later this year

Speaking on an investor call after Microsoft’s latest quarterly earnings report yesterday, Klein revealed that the Redmond firm is working closely with OEMs on a “new suite of small, touch devices powered by Windows”.

The Microsoft exec, who is stepping down from his post in June, said that the models would come to market at “competitive price points” with Microsoft officials adding that the devices “will be available in the coming months”.

This news comes just a week after the Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft intends to launch a 7-inch Surface tablet at the end of 2013 and also follows the software giant's [...]

HP reports $3.3 billion dollar loss on webOS

Even though HP reported higher-than-expected earnings today on revenue of $32.1 billion, the company's revelations around the fiscal losses related to the shuttering of its webOS business stood out in a big way.

Above and beyond the $1.2 billion HP spent on Palm in April 2010, the cost of shuttering the company's nascent webOS and tablet business cost an extra $3.3 billion, according to HP's Q4 2011 earnings report and call.

HP's earnings report states:

Non-GAAP earnings and operating profit information excludes after-tax costs of $3.3 billion, or $1.56 per diluted share, related to the wind down of HP's webOS device [...]
