The Windows 8.1 application is now live in the Windows Store and will work on both Windows 8 and RT machines.
As with the firm’s iOS and Android apps, readers will find that the conventional controls remain in place. They can still flip through magazines (both curated and those created by other Flipboard users), subscribe and add content to magazines.
That’s where the familiarity ends however as the new app has been slightly tweaked to suit Windows 8. For example, users now need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to display action icons like Subscribe, Refresh, Edit and Flip It, while swiping down presents recommended users to follow and magazines [...]
With catalogs Flipboard says it can more effectively package a product ad or purchase option next to relevant content — much like magazines pitch space to the advertisers best suited to their audience.
Flipboard has partnered with a handful of brands like Fab, Banana Republic and Birchbox, which will create their own catalogs — filled with their own products and house-tailored ads — for users to peruse from the shopping category in Flipboard’s digital magazine stand.

The companies announced the deal on Thursday and the arrangement will see content from the People and InStyle magazines become available immediately to Flipboard users. The Time and Fortune magazines are expected to travel the same path at some point in December.
This is obviously good news for Flipboard in its pursuit of the best publishers but it is also a boon too for Time Inc. According to the press release on the announcement, Flipboard has been “designed to reflect each title’s unique brand experience”, while the pages of these publications will be littered with full-page ad partners. As just one example, Gucci is the advertising launch partner for [...]
The figure was announced by Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers venture capitalist John Doerr at this week’s TechCrunch Disrupt conference and subsequently confirmed by a Flipboard spokesperson.
Doerr, an investor who also sits on Flipboard’s board of directors, added that over 1 million people are creating magazines on the platform – a feature added with version 2.0 – and said that there are now three million of these magazines in circulation.
These figure are remarkable considering Flipboard, which has announced a media partnership with New York Times and made its magazines available online in recent times, only had 20 million users this time last [...]
In an email which was sent out to its users, Flud CEO Bobby Ghoshal confirmed that the firm will look to sell its technology and intellectual property, but didn’t detail the reason behind its exit from the marketplace.
“Flud managed to capture the hearts of millions of you all around the world and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to work for you, every day, for the past three years,” wrote Ghoshal.
“We also want to thank our investors and advisors for believing in our team and our vision, they were instrumental in giving the Flud team a shot.”
Despite being one of the first news aggregators to launch, Flud remained niche [...]
The company confirmed the news on its blog today and said that the first step to desktop involves over two million user-created magazines, a feature introduced with Flipboard 2.0 in March, coming to the web.
Current Flipboard users are able to share these magazines via email or social networks, with recipients able to read the content on their desktop, smartphone and tablet browser, even if they don't have a Flipboard account.
As with Flipboard’s apps for iPad, iPhone and Android tablets, readers can “flip” pages from left to right as well as click through to original news sources and subscribe to Flipboard magazines.
Flipboard, which has [...]

If it takes you a little while to get up and running in the morning you’d be well advised to check out the new Morning for iPad app (iTunes).
