HTML5 champion The Financial Times gets ready to ditch iOS app

The publisher turned to HTML5, having become disgruntled by the fees and publisher rights demanded by Apple, when submitting applications to the App Store. The FT subsequently saw its web-app user-base overtake that of the iOS version in just three months.

Despite having pulled the iOS app from iTunes halfway through last year, the FT did keep the version running so that subscribers with it already installed could continue to use the application. However, with ever falling user numbers and a number of pressing maintenance issues, paidContent says that the publisher now plans to render the app unusable over the next month.

Path was described by Morin as a modern journal, which can be shared with close family and friends via Facebook, Tumblr and Foursquare. The app is currently available for iPhone and Android, with Path having just launched version two of its iPhone app. Morin said that tablet support is not too far away.

“I think we will definitely do tablets,” said Morin. “At the moment, we’ve tried to specialize for the small screen of the iPhone, and the iPad takes a different level of focus. It’s a different design and we want to make sure we do it right.”

Path aims to be ubiquitous for products. “We’re all focused on mobile right [...]

Speaking to New Age Media, Audi’s UK digital marketing manager, Hugh Fletcher, said that smartphones generated 7.5% of the manufacturer’s online traffic, while tablets accounted for a significant 10.5%.

Fletcher chose not to reveal financial details of the brand’s online spending but did say that the company is now more interested in creating targeted campaigns based around relevant events, such as car meet-ups.

Prior to the mobile advertising boom, Audi had generally used mobile for direct-response advertising (such as telemarketing), but now plans to launch more adverts based on HTML 5 web code.

“There was a nervousness that mobile [...]
