The big clear-out: Best Buy will sell the old Kindle Fire HD for $99 on Black Friday

The retailer has previously leaked details of its Black Friday deals by showing its multi-page ad online, but it appears that it has different ideas for 2013. A local Best Buy employee showed off some of this year’s deals, including the $99 Kindle Fire HD 7-inch tablet, to the Little Rock, Arkansas TV station. The report mentioned that the slate usually retails for $199.99, which presumably means that the offer is for the 16GB edition (the 8GB model comes in at $139 ordinarily). The Kindle Fire HD was essentially replaced by a newer and cheaper version (it now starts from $139) when Amazon announced the new 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablets in [...]

New study claims that Samsung beats out iPad for tablet satisfaction

In its annual U.S. Tablet Satisfaction Study, J.D Power drilled down into tablet customer satisfaction by performance, ease of use, physical design, tablet features and cost before surprisingly concluding Samsung owners to be the most satisfied. The Korean firm ranked highest with a score of 835 out of 1000 and the vendor was also the only one to improve on all five factors since April 2013. In particular, the firm improved by 25% for cost, a sure-sign of the Galaxy Tab's on-going battle with the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire in the low-end tablet market. Apple, meanwhile, came in just behind with 833 points and was especially strong in the areas of [...]

Microsoft’s new Surface 2 tablet is a big leap forward vs Surface RT, but is it enough?

“Microsoft’s Surface 2 turns the entire contents of my backpack into one device. It’s mostly a tablet, a light and slim device that’s great for reading, watching movies, or surfing the web,” writes David Pierce for The Verge. “But when it’s business time, the Surface 2 steps up. With a keyboard attachment, a full version of Office, and everything else Windows 8.1 offers, it’s equally suited to watching Scandal and taking over the world.”  “Arriving roughly a year after Microsoft’s first major foray into the consumer tablet market, the Surface 2 delivers on most of its promises,” [...]

Palm founder & tablet godfather Jeff Hawkins: ‘A lot of things had to come together to make the modern tablet’

Hawkins has an impressive resume when it comes to all things electronic. Starting out at Intel after graduating from university with an electrical engineering degree, he moved to Grid Systems in 1982 and later founded Palm in 1992, where he worked on Graffiti software, Hotsync synchronization software for HP devices and the highly-rated Palm Pilot MDA. [The firm later developed webOS – the now open-source operating system for tablets and Internet-connected TVs – some years after Hawkins’s departure.] But where tablets are concerned, Hawkins’s most poignant work arguably came under his guise of vice president of research at Grid Pad Systems, [...]
