Want a budget Android tablet? Lenovo has two new models going cheap

Lenovo isn’t only focusing on premium Windows 8 tablet and hybrid laptops – the firm has just announced that its two new affordable Android tablets are now available to buy in the U.S.

The IdeaTab A1000 and IdeaTab A3000 were announced at the Mobile World Congress in February and can be ordered from Lenovo for $189 and $229, respectively.

Both devices sport rather basic 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution displays but do run the latest iteration of Android, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

The A1000 has a dual-core 1.2GHz MediaTek MT8317 processor, while the A3000 has a single-core 1.2GHz MT6575 processor. Both tablets come with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, [...]

Will your next tablet have a glasses-free 3D display?

RealD chief financial officer (CFO) Andrew Skarupa raised that very possibility when speaking at the Piper Jaffray investor conference in New York recently.

“We fundamentally believe that what we really take this market to get going in terms of content and active users with 3D will be a glasses-free based product,” said Skarupa. His comments were reported by Consumer Electronics Daily (requires subscription).

“We have something that is very compelling and novel. We see it first in tablets and smartphones and everything migrating to the migrating to a larger screen. We’re excited about it and we feel optimistic.”

3D screens have [...]

Nokia is supposedly putting its tablet plans on hold

Rumors towards the end of last year had suggested that Nokia was intending to launch a 10.1-inch Windows RT tablet at the MWC in Barcelona, but that belief is now being brought into question.

Market research firm Strategy Analytics believes that the Finnish handset maker will not have a tablet at the show, a sign possibly that the widely-reported model is still not yet ready for production.

""Nokia will not unveil a tablet with a Microsoft operating system at this year's Mobile World Congress. We believe Nokia's strategy will be 'smartphones first' for MWC this year," said the company on its website.

"And rightly so. Nokia will [...]

Mysterious tablet turns up at Nokia event in Pakistan

The Finnish company hosted a conference in Pakistan yesterday and on one point during proceedings what looked like a 7 or 8-inch tablet was shown on the stage screen, alongside a Nokia 620 phone and some kind of large desktop display.

Although this image could well be demonstrating the cross-platform capabilities of Windows 8, Nokia is rumored to have made a tablet.

It has been widely reported that Nokia will announce a 10.1-inch model running Windows RT and with its own battery-equipped keyboard cover at the Mobile World Congress although the company has — publicly at least – remained quiet on the matter.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently told [...]

Samsung to buy small stake in tablet stylus maker Wacom

The deal is due to be completed on February 19 and will see the Korean firm take hold of a 5% stake in Wacom, the Japanese firm which makes graphic tablets for designers and pressure-sensitive tablet styluses for everyday consumers.

On announcing the news, Wacom said that the investment will be put towards product development, manufacturing and supply chain enhancements for Samsung products.

The Galaxy Tab maker has arguably been the biggest campaigner of tablet styluses over the last two years, with the firm having equipped its 5-inch and 10-inch Galaxy Notes with the highly-rated S-Pen stylus. Wacom’s technology is already used for the first and [...]

Samsung to announce 8-inch Galaxy Note next month?

According to online fansite SamMobile, the Galaxy Note 8.0 will sport a resolution of 1280 x 800, 2GB of RAM and either 16GB or 32GB of storage.

The source adds that the tablet will run Android 4.2 — the latest version of Jelly Bean, and will come with the S-pen stylus, dual-facing cameras (1.3MP on the front, 5MP on the rear) and a micro SD card slot.

It is also believed that there will be two versions of the tablet, one with 3G and WiFi with the other being WiFi only.

Since the inception of its Galaxy Note range, Samsung has launched two 5-inch models (the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note II) and the 10.1-inch model, which first appeared at [...]

Fujitsu ditches Android Honeycomb, picks Windows 8 for waterproof tablet

Engadget saw the 10.1-inch tablet at the show, and reported that while full specifications were unavailable at the time, the model does come with dual-facing cameras, connections for microSD and micro USB and boasts a metallic finish.

The tablet, which was also on show at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this February, is expected to debut at some point in October or November, with the latter perhaps more likely given the first Windows 8 tablets are to arrive on October 26.

Price details were not discussed at the show, although the Q4 availability would certainly tie-in with Fujitsu's previously exposed roadmap.

A rugged, waterproof Windows 8 tablet [...]

Samsung ‘to unveil the Galaxy Note 2’ on August 29

Samsung is due to hold a press event at the IFA exhibition in Berlin, Germany on August 29, and a company worker has already said that the event will see the arrival of the Galaxy Note 2.

“We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin”, said a Samsung spokesman when speaking to Reuters.

Samsung announced the first Galaxy Note at the 2011 IFA show, and the device quickly won praise for its excellent 5.3-inch 1280 x 800 resolution AMOLED display, dual-core 1.4GHz processor, and accurate S-Pen stylus. Although launching with Android 2.3, the phablet was later updated to Android 4.0.

The model has certainly [...]

Samsung to launch a new 10-inch Galaxy Tab in May?

Citing sources close to the Korean company, CNET reports that Samsung could take the wraps off a 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab with a dual-core processor at the event, although the news site says that this won’t be branded as the Galaxy Tab 2, which is expected to feature a quad-core processor when it launches later in the year.

TabTimes contacted Samsung for clarification of this rumor, but we never heard back from the company.

Should the firm go ahead and launch this rumored device, it would certainly make for a large, almost confusing, tablet family, with Samsung already offering the original Galaxy Tab, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the new Galaxy Tab 2 tablets, which are [...]
