Editors Note: We know this is not an Android tablet, specifically, but with a 6.8-inch display, it’s large enough to be a tablet. This post originally appeared on our sister site Android Authority, your source for all things Android.
Every flagship needs a bigger brother or at least that’s how it seems smartphone manufacturers are thinking. Apple have the iPhone 6 Plus, Sony have the Xperia Z Ultra, HTC have the One M9 Plus and even Huawei are getting in on the act with the P8 Max.
Announced alongside the P8 in London, the P8 Max is a larger-than-life phablet that really pushes the size boundaries of a smartphone. Featuring an incredibly large [...]
Now Samsung has come up with its own term for the devices. It's pushing the term “fonblet” which, like phablet, also implies smartphone/tablet but is already being met with derision.
TechCrunch for one, had this to say:
"Leaving aside that fonblet hits the ears with all the sonorous pleasure of a cat falling down the side of a skyscraper clad in chalkboard, it also combines the word “tablet” with the word “fone,” which as most will be aware, doesn’t actually exist."
Samsung wants to further distinguish the fonblet name by saying it's for larger smartphones that also include handwriting [...]
Samsung pioneered the so-called 'phablet' design (smartphone/tablet hybrid) with its line of Galaxy Note devices. A new report says Apple plans to enter the market next September with the iPhone 6 featuring a 5-inch display, which would still be smaller than Samsung's models.
The Japanese magazine Mac Fan summarized a report by Macotakara that claims Apple's next-generation iPhone might include a 1,920-by-1,080-pixel 5-inch display packing in 440 pixels per inch.
According to the report, Apple plans to make both sides of the screen as "thin as possible" which would make it easier to operate with one [...]
The Korean company didn’t expand on that information with specific price and availability deals, although AT&T did later announce that the model will become available on August 23 and starting at $150 on a two-year contract.
Announced back in April, the Galaxy Mega has a 6.3-inch 1280 x 720 screen, runs Android 4.2.2 and sports a dual-core 1.7Ghz processor.
It also has some very unique features that won’t find on Samsung’s other devices, namely the ability to use the phablet as an infrared remote controller for a TV and ‘S Translator’ for instant language recognition and translation.
There is also Samsung’s Group Play [...]
Samsung fansite SamMobile claims that the much-rumored “Galaxy Gear” smartwatch will debut at the “Samsung Unpacked Episode 2” event, which is taking place at the IFA exhibition in Berlin, Germany on September 4.
The website, which has also been a constant source of Samsung tablet rumors in recent times, says that the smartwatch will act as a companion device to the firm’s collection of Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
Previous reports have indicated that Samsung will take the wrap off a smartwatch and the third-generation Galaxy Note phablet at the German tech exhibition.
The Z30 smartphone is rumored to have a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with (1,280 x 720 resolution) which is big enough to be considered one of the new generation of over-sized smartphone/kind-of-a-tablet devices that are often referred to as a phablet.
The Z30 will run the latest version of the BlackBerry OS (vers. 10.2), powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a large (2800 mAh) rechargeable battery inside.
TheStreet.com spotted some leaked photos and video on Vietnamese websites that claim to show the new Z30. A BlackBerry spokesperson said the company doesn't "comment on [...]
Citing an anonymous tipster who claimed to have seen Nokia’s product roadmap, Nokiapoweruser reports that Nokia will announce a first tablet – with data from AT&T – in the last week of September.
The model will most likely run Windows 8.1, which would perhaps not be much of a surprise considering the firm reportedly previously cancelled plans to launch a Windows RT tablet.
But that’s not all that is going on the Finnish firm. The Lumia handset maker is also apparently planning to announce a phablet in the first week of November and could announce dual-SIM Lumia phone – which would be handy for business users – in [...]
Samsung confirmed the news by sending out press invites over the weekend, invites which urged journalists to ‘Note the date’ of September 4.
This news doesn’t come as some great surprise, although we will have to wait to see if the new model is of phablet or tablet proportions.
Speculation leading up to the event suggests that it will be a third-generation Galaxy Note phablet with an improved 5.7-inch display, 3GB of RAM and an Exynos 5 processor.
Samsung launched both the first and second generation Galaxy Notes at the exhibition, while there are rumors that this year’s event could see the introduction of the firm’s first smartwatch.
Apple is reportedly exploring larger screen sizes for its iPhone models in 2014, according to Reuters reports. The devices may come with 4.7-inch and 5.7 inch screens.
There has been much speculation that Apple is planning for a cheaper iPhone. Now it sounds like Apple aims to go into phablet territory, a term for giant smartphones over 5-inches that may as well be tablets.
It certainly makes sense for Apple to release a 4.7-inch iPhone, since that’s pretty much the standard size for Android smartphone screens these days, says VentureBeat's Devindra Hardawar.
"But the prospect of a 5.7-inch iPhone is a bit more surprising, especially after [...]
