Windows 8 tablets give SMBs more bang for the buck thanks to easy deployment and manageability

December 17, 2014

[featured][/featured]

It can be a challenge for small-to-medium-sized-businesses (SMBs) to pick a mobile platform because the decision involves more than just choosing a device. The new generation of lightweight tablets provides unprecedented mobility for sales people, executives and others, but whether model X integrates with your current infrastructure, is easily managed and offers compatibility with the software you’re already using is another matter.

Most SMBs don’t have big IT staffs or the time and resources to adapt their networks and train staff to support new, incompatible devices. A ready solution comes in the form of Windows 8 tablets favored by a growing [...]

iPhone 6 helps iOS grab enterprise share back from Android

November 10, 2014

Not that Apple ever was seriously threatened, but the second quarter saw Android take two percentage points from iOS for a 32% share of enterprise activations as ranked by Good Technology’s Good Mobility Index. In its newest report released today, Android’s share stands at 29% for the third quarter, while iOS stands at 69%, up from 67% in Q2.

For the sixth consecutive quarter, Windows Phone held a 1% share of mobile activations.

While the newest iPhones had only been out less than a month when the data was collected, Good says a clear trend is the popularity of the iPhone 6 model accounting for 85% of activations versus the larger and more expensive [...]

3 reasons why the BYOD juggernaut is just getting started

November 13, 2013

In its current guise, BYOD is somewhat like bringing up your first child. You’ve done the basics – the feeding, the changing and the trudging day to the day with a lack of sleep.

Then there comes the anxiety when the child comes down with a virus (read: security) or as to how you’re going to afford new milk formula, clothing and others essentials (data and device costs).

A couple of years later and you think the easy part is coming.  The child no longer cries without explanation, is toilet trained and sleeps throughout the night. But then other hurdles emerge — like schooling, kids clubs and logistical nightmares – and you realize you [...]

Microsoft’s new ad for the Surface 2 tablets just doesn’t add up

November 11, 2013

The San Francisco billboard, which was first spotted by Apple Insider, depicts a Surface tablet running Excel. The spreadsheet is titled ‘Hawaii Budget’ and attempts to add up all the costs expected on the holiday.

Beady-eyed journalists spotted that the seven numbers totalled $9,500 – some $500 more than the correct final figure.

This news comes less than a month after Microsoft’s outspoken PR Frank Shaw dismissed Apple’s own IWork suite as being “struggling” and “lightweight” productivity apps that are “less powerful” than Microsoft Office.

Why the rise of the Productivity Tablet is a reset of Steve Jobs’ vision

November 10, 2013

But they believed they had something. From very early on you could see the writing on the wall that this form factor alone could change computing in positive ways and even advance computing in ways the laptop and desktop form factors never could.

When analysts (including myself) started thinking about how tablets fit into the overall computing mix, many firms started labeling them as media tablets. The belief was that this form factor would not be used for productivity, but just for consumption of media.

While it is still true today that many tablets are developed with pure media consumption in mind, there is a trend toward productivity with these devices as [...]

This Week in Tablets: 6 Key questions for the rest of 2013—and beyond

November 9, 2013

Mid-November? How did we get here so quickly? The last 10 months feel like they’ve passed in a blur, and now we’re on the fast track to January 1, 2014.

Right now, most of the major tablet releases are set, and for the next few months, we’ll sit back to tally the results. It’s not a stretch to assume that by the time we enter the new year, not much will have changed based on market share or sales.

In other words, Apple will have sold millions of iPad Airs and iPad Minis. The Android OS will continue its surge in consumer tablets. And Windows will continue to claw its way forward, but will still lag the leaders.

This said, there’s [...]
