September 10, 2013

The Renault R-Link tablet is a 7-inch Android slate and relies on TomTom technology to offer real-time services like maps, navigation and traffic information.

The tablet was announced as long ago as LeWeb 2011 but has since seen numerous updates, with TomTom having partnered with Orange and Atos to improve the apps available on the R-Link App store. When TabTimes last saw the app store, there were just a handful of useful application, including ones for basic email and social networking.

How Google Play trumps App Store for app downloads but lags behind on revenue

August 1, 2013

Leveraging data from its App Annie Intelligence index, the company came to the conclusion that Google Play downloads topped App Store downloads for the first time in Q2, and by a significant 10%.

The firm attributed this to higher activity in emerging markets like Russia, India, Brazil and China (talking of which, 3 of the top 10 downloaded games on iOS were from Chinese developers in Q2), although Android’s leadership in the smartphone space and growing adoption in the tablet market would also likely have played a part.

However, all is not lost for Apple. App Annie maintains that the iOS App Store brings in 2.3 times the revenue of Google Play, a finding which [...]

Worried about someone stealing your tablet? You should disguise it as a print magazine

July 25, 2013

Surveying 2,000 British tablet owners, digital newsstand app lekiosk found that a quarter of these chose not to take their tablet on holiday as they were too scared their device would be stolen, while another third (36%) admitted they protected their gadget on holiday by ‘constantly’ watching over them.

Almost another third (29%) admitted to hiding their iPads, Android and Windows 8 tablets under clothes or in shoes.

With tablets clearly bringing some anxiety to tablet owners during their vacation, lekiosk has since come up with an ingenious anti-theft device – a tablet case that looks like a glossy print magazine when closed.

However, [...]

App use on tablets dominates the mobile Web when it comes to media

June 10, 2013

The number of mobile video users in the U.S. took off in the first quarter of this year, gaining 25% from a year ago to 45.3 million.

The gain positions mobile phones as the fastest-growing platform by viewership in the last year, while audiences on traditional TV and desktop Web slipped, according to Nielsen’s latest cross-platform report.

The Nielsen Cross-Platform report also took a more in-depth look at media use on smartphones and tablets in the first quarter.

iPad users spent 76% of their time with apps (12:24 hours for men and 15:05 for women), each month. When it came to streaming video, iPad app users spent 1:48 hours per month versus 1:15 for [...]

Sign of the times: BlackBerry messaging app is coming to Android and iOS

May 14, 2013

The firm said that the app will be free on both operating systems, providing the devices are running at least iOS 6 or Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0).

"You might ask the question why is Blackberry doing this now," said CEO Thorsten Heins, when speaking at BlackBerry Live.

“It is a state of confidence. The BB10 platform is so strong and the response has been so good that the time is right for BBM to become an independent mobile messaging platform.”

The move will at first see BBM only usable for messaging and group features on third-party operating systems, although Heins has said that screen sharing, BBM voice and BBM channels — [...]

The tablet effect? Media giants hail ‘mobile-first’ era

May 7, 2013

Following a flurry of positive reports on the state of tablet advertising, of publishers monetizing with mobile and the ever-growing adoption of HTML5 apps, all three trends were tackled head on at The Financial Times’ Digital Media Conference in London last week.

The two-day event saw panels deliberate over the future of digital and the place of social networking, but it was the subject of ‘Can brands make money on mobile’ which attracted significant buzz.

Senior figures from Google, The Weather Channel, consumer goods company Unilever and pop culture news website BuzzFeed all took part in the panel, which was moderated by Richard Waters, FT’s [...]

Apple’s purchase of WiFiSLAM part of a ‘breakout year’ for indoor location apps

March 26, 2013

Apple paid about $20 million for the Silicon Valley startup, according to the Wall Street Journal. WifiSLAM’s technology helps mobile apps detect a smartphone or tablet user’s location within a building using WiFi signals.

To date, the company has pitching its tech to app developers for indoor mapping and new ways to navigate retail locations.

What the typically-secretive Apple plans to do with WiFiSLAM isn’t known. Rival Google already offers indoor mapping for some airports, shopping centers and sports stadiums. Apple’s Maps was released last year to poor reviews and the company has been busy working to improve it.

On the website of an [...]
