Video claims to be first look at redesigned, easier to hold, iPad 5

The video by Unbox Therapy shows a narrower form factor (about half a quarter coin narrower on each side or 1.5 centimeters overall), though the viewable screen size, which now goes closer to the edge of the unit, is the same 9.7-inches as current iPads.

Other features borrow from the iPad mini including upgraded speakers and, with the new form factor, the ability for someone, as the narrator says, with “normal to large hands” to hold the device with one hand.

Apple doesn’t comment on unannounced products. New iPads were at one time rumored to be set for release in September, but now a September 10 event Apple has planned is looking like it will focus [...]

Is this the first image of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch?

Ahead of the expected unveiling at the IFA technology convention in Germany this week, VentureBeat writer Christina Farr got a peak at a prototype of the device.

In her report, Farr details that the watch is about 3-inches diagonally and with dark black and grey coloring, although this may change in the final version of the product.

Farr notes that the Galaxy Gear smartwatch looks “clunky and masculine” but says that Bluetooth can be used to connect with Galaxy S smartphones, tablets and potentially other Android devices too.

Wi-Fi is supported for light Internet browsing and email and there are Android apps pre-loaded for social media, health [...]

Ubuntu launches ambitious Android superphone for the enterprise project

This will be "a new class of device which brings forward what we see as the inevitable convergence of the phone and the PC," aimed primarily at enterprises and enthusiasts — "people like us," said Ubuntu chief Mark Shuttleworth.

Canonical is using Indiegogo in hopes of raising $32 million over 30 days that will finance a limited production run of 40,000 phones.

Shuttleworth said the plan to build only tens of thousands of phones (rather than a mass market device) will afford easier access to the most advanced components.

Preliminary specs for the Ubuntu Edge include a multi-core processor with at least 4GB of [...]

Microsoft details new Windows 8 device requirements

As of January 2014, certified Windows systems will be required to support Bluetooth on all devices with Wi-Fi. Front-facing 720p webcams will be required for systems with integrated displays (tablets, notebooks and all-in-ones).

In January 2015, TPM 2.0 (Microsoft's Trusted Platform Module for security) will be required on all certified Windows devices.

Microsoft’s 128GB Surface Pro tablet available for $400 next week, but here’s the catch…

The Redmond giant will offer attendees to its TechEd conference in New Orleans next week the opportunity to buy a Surface RT with Touch Cover for $99.99, or the 128GB Surface Pro for just $400 — over half its normal price.

Despite the deals, it is worth noting that TechEd attendance itself doesn't come cheap.

Access to the full conference costs $2,195, although a TechExpo-only ticket is just $225.

TechEd attendees, including customers, partners, press, third-party speakers and staff, will be able to buy the tablets at the discounted prices.

TabTimes Tablet Strategy conference comes to San Francisco on February 20, 2013

At the very successful first edition of the Tablet Strategy conference, last April in New York City, many attendees requested that we hold a similar event closer to Silicon Valley.

This is why, in 2013, Tablet Strategy will be a two event series. iPad 4 could have carbon fiber body, flexible widescreen display with integrated speakers

The first of these rumors came from tech site Examiner which, citing an industry analyst, reported that the next-generation iPad could feature a 16:9 widescreen display.

“I have talked to at least three people close to Apple who say that there are new iPad prototypes that have a 16:9 aspect ratio,” Los Angeles analyst Paul Mueller.

“They aren't talking about the upcoming iPad Mini either.”

The 16:9 aspect ratio already features on the new iPhone 5 and is commonly used for widescreen HD TVs.

Following on from that and it appears as though Apple could make this a flexible display with built-in speakers, according to Unwired [...]

New TED Books app line launches for iPad and iPhone

The free TED Books app works with TED Books that will sell for $2.99 each and include video and audio embeds, social integration, and a suite of multimedia features.

The non-profit company’s slogan is “Ideas worth spreading.”

TED Books are short, original, electronic books produced every two weeks by the TED organization. Titles in the TED Books lineup are typically under 20,000 words, as TED describes it — long enough to unleash a powerful narrative, but short enough to be read in a single sitting.

"TED Books are designed to communicate a powerful idea in approximately one hour of reading" said TED Curator Chris [...]
