Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer champions hybrid tablets

June 27, 2013

Speaking at the Build Conference on Wednesday, Ballmer waved around a Lenovo ThinkPad Helix hybrid tablet and made his pitch as to why convertible devices are the way forward.

"How many of us have gone to a meeting with somebody who brought a tablet and then when it comes time to actually take notes, writes them down on pencil and paper,” said Ballmer.

“Or can't get at the spreadsheet…or try to use it in terminal emulator mode…or take [a long time] to set up and turn their tablet into something that approximates a PC.”

Lenovo’s ThinkPad 2 tablet finally available to order; should reach customers by January 8

December 20, 2012

The Windows 8 Pro tablet was announced back in August and had been slated to launch on October 26, the release date of the Surface RT, before being pushed back to November 16.

The tablet subsequently never made it to market on the revised date, and although the model did revisit and pass FCC recently, there were suggestions just this week that some Windows 8 tablet vendors have been struggling with a problem with Intel’s Clover Trail chips.

As it is, Lenovo had today confirmed on its website that the business-ready Windows 8 tablet will arrive on January 8.

The ThinkPad 2 is available in various guises, with the 64GB WiFi model starting from $649. All [...]

November 7, 2012

The tablet will start from $649 and promises a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 resolution display, an Intel Atom processor (so it runs Windows 8 Pro), 128GB of memory and a claimed battery life of up to 10 hours.

It will also come equipped with a micro HDMI port, a full-sized USB connection, dual-facing cameras (8MP camera on the rear, 2MP on the front) and enterprise-grade security in the form of Trusted Platform Module and the Computrace Mobile software for managing devices and data.

Businesses will be pleased to learn that, in addition, the ThinkPad 2 will support multi-user log-ins, making tablet sharing possible in the workplace.

Optional extras include 3G or 4G LTE [...]

Canonical, the company behind the Linux-based open source operating system Ubuntu, is reportedly in talks with hardware partners to manufacture Ubuntu-powered tablets and smartphones.

According to a report by ZDNet earlier today, Canonical expects the new devices to be available by next year.

In a report on Canonical’s release of the 12.04 version of Ubuntu today, the Chinese site tech.sina.com.cn quoted Ubuntu’s chief representative in China as saying Ubuntu for the "Tablet PC" will be launched next year.

Canonical has been moving to tablet support for awhile and has certified tablets, like [...]

Asus wins court ruling to sell Transformer tablet over Hasbro’s objections

March 27, 2012

Hasbro had filed suit against Asus last year claiming consumers might confuse the Transformer Prime tablet with its Transformers toy line.

paidContent reports that a federal judge in the case refused to believe that consumers would be confused into believing Asus’s tablet was a Hasbro product, stating in part:

“There is nothing gimmicky about the Eee Pad Transformer or the Eee Pad Transformer Prime, nor can it be said that there is any similarity in the use or function between Hasbro and Asus’s products.”

The court also said that Asus use of the word “transformer” was correct because it [...]

McAfee Mobile Security: A quiet and efficient bodyguard for Android tablets

January 20, 2012

The beauty of the app is its simplicity. The app is clearly laid out and most actions can be sought and started in a few easy steps.

TabTimes found some of the most useful features to be the ability to lock the device, delete or restore contacts (either locally or even from your tablet’s linked email account), back-up data and agree to let the app have administrative rights.

This last function allows users to prevent the app from being uninstalled, enable factory data resets and monitor and act upon incorrect password attempts. Users can also introduce new ways of locking their device.

McAfee is currently offering a free 30-day trial on the app, which is [...]

Lenovo exec: India is yet to become a nation of tablet users

December 27, 2011

Earlier this year, Lenovo released two tablet models in India—the ThinkPad Tablet for enterprise needs and the IdeaPad for consumers. Thus far, Babu says, the enterprise-oriented device is selling better, despite the Rs 40,000 price point ($760 USD).

“Tablet sales are largely happening in the metro cities,” he said, referencing a corporate buyer profile as the primary purchaser for these devices.

In the interview, Babu also says that, because there is less high-speed wireless and WiFi across India, the desktop computer and CD drives and USB devices are preferred. He sees it taking a few years before India is a nation of ingrained tablet [...]

Lenovo’s ThinkPad Tablet now includes multi-carrier mobile broadband

November 23, 2011

This optional add-on will allow large enterprise customers across the globe to latch onto and switch 3G networks without having to swap out hardware parts.

Essentially a universal mobile broadband part, Gobi 3000 is a standard reference design that allows IT departments in large multi-national companies to quickly configure and connect their devices— smartphones, laptops and now tablets—to different mobile networks, provided they have accounts set up with the network providers. The multi-band functionality includes HSPA+, GSM, CDMA, and EV-DO.

The Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet is the first Android tablet to offer this option.

"Our Gobi 3000 solution was [...]
