Speaking at the Build Conference on Wednesday, Ballmer waved around a Lenovo ThinkPad Helix hybrid tablet and made his pitch as to why convertible devices are the way forward.
"How many of us have gone to a meeting with somebody who brought a tablet and then when it comes time to actually take notes, writes them down on pencil and paper,” said Ballmer.
“Or can't get at the spreadsheet…or try to use it in terminal emulator mode…or take [a long time] to set up and turn their tablet into something that approximates a PC.”
The Windows 8 Pro tablet was announced back in August and had been slated to launch on October 26, the release date of the Surface RT, before being pushed back to November 16.
The tablet subsequently never made it to market on the revised date, and although the model did revisit and pass FCC recently, there were suggestions just this week that some Windows 8 tablet vendors have been struggling with a problem with Intel’s Clover Trail chips.
As it is, Lenovo had today confirmed on its website that the business-ready Windows 8 tablet will arrive on January 8.
The ThinkPad 2 is available in various guises, with the 64GB WiFi model starting from $649. All [...]
The tablet will start from $649 and promises a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 resolution display, an Intel Atom processor (so it runs Windows 8 Pro), 128GB of memory and a claimed battery life of up to 10 hours.
It will also come equipped with a micro HDMI port, a full-sized USB connection, dual-facing cameras (8MP camera on the rear, 2MP on the front) and enterprise-grade security in the form of Trusted Platform Module and the Computrace Mobile software for managing devices and data.
Businesses will be pleased to learn that, in addition, the ThinkPad 2 will support multi-user log-ins, making tablet sharing possible in the workplace.
Optional extras include 3G or 4G LTE [...]

Hasbro had filed suit against Asus last year claiming consumers might confuse the Transformer Prime tablet with its Transformers toy line.
paidContent reports that a federal judge in the case refused to believe that consumers would be confused into believing Asus’s tablet was a Hasbro product, stating in part:
“There is nothing gimmicky about the Eee Pad Transformer or the Eee Pad Transformer Prime, nor can it be said that there is any similarity in the use or function between Hasbro and Asus’s products.”
The court also said that Asus use of the word “transformer” was correct because it [...]
The beauty of the app is its simplicity. The app is clearly laid out and most actions can be sought and started in a few easy steps.
TabTimes found some of the most useful features to be the ability to lock the device, delete or restore contacts (either locally or even from your tablet’s linked email account), back-up data and agree to let the app have administrative rights.
This last function allows users to prevent the app from being uninstalled, enable factory data resets and monitor and act upon incorrect password attempts. Users can also introduce new ways of locking their device.
McAfee is currently offering a free 30-day trial on the app, which is [...]
