Retailer confirms November 21 launch date for Retina Display iPad mini

As first spotted by MacRumors, the listing runs through all the 16GB tablet’s specs — including the new 2048 x 1536 resolution display and Apple A7 processor — before revealing the release date towards the bottom of the page.

Apple announced the new iPad mini as well as the iPad Air in San Francisco on October 22.

The smaller model is expected to be the big attraction this holiday season though; Apple CEO Tim Cook admits that the firm may struggle to meet demand while one analyst reckons the slate could outsell its bigger brother by a factor of almost 2:1.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says ‘competitors are confused’ about tablets

"Our competitors chased netbooks," said Cook. "Now they're busy making PCs into tablets and tablets into PCs," he added, in reference to hybrid tablet and what Intel is calling 2-in-1 portables.

"Competitors are confused," he said. "We believe deeply in this category and we're not slowing down on our innovation."

California man sues Apple CEO Tim Cook over automatic iOS 7 update

The suit, titled "Mark David Menacher vs. Tim Cook" by the San Diego County branch of California's Superior Court, seeks a method to remove automatically downloaded iOS update files — specifically the new iOS 7 binary — and $50 in remuneration, reports CNET.

The automatic update system has been active since the release of iOS 6, but many users are holding off  upgrading to iOS 7. But that means the automatically-downloaded installation file, which weighs in at more than one gigabyte and cannot be removed by the user, may decrease a device's available memory by up to 15% with no way to recover the storage space.

Apple poaches Burberry chief exec to boost retail efforts

Ahrendts joins Apple as the senior vice president for retail and online stores and will be responsible of overseeing the strategy, expansions and general operations of these stories. She will report direct to Tim Cook.

Ahrendts, who was chief executive at fashion retailer Burberry for almost 10 years, isn’t the first left-field choice Apple has made when it comes to retail personnel. Back at the start of last year, the firm surprisingly hired John Browett, formerly of UK retailer Dixons Retail, only for the exec to depart just 10 months later.

This latest recruitment may well fuel speculation that Apple is looking to ramp up [...]

Get ready for iOS 7: Apple announces dates for WWDC

The company has detailed that the five-day event will play host to more than 100 technical sessions from over 1,000 Apple engineers, as well as the Apple Design Awards, which pick out the best apps available on both the App Store and Mac App Store.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m. PDT and while these are expensive, TUAW believes that Apple is planning to allow registered Apple developers to view all session videos online during the conference.

“We look forward to gathering at WWDC 2013 with the incredible community of iOS and OS X developers,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, in a prepared [...]

Apple is getting ready to launch the new iPad mini: rumor

Tim Cook’s company has cut iPad mini shipments to between 10-12 million units for the second quarter, according to Digitimes, which cited multiple sources who provide various components for Apple’s 7.85-inch tablet.

The source notes that Apple has cut the shipments target because of “increased competition from various 7-inch Android tablets” and also attributes the move to the impending launch of the next-generation iPad mini, which is now expected to launch in Q3.

The second-generation iPad mini is expected to boast a 2048 x 1536 resolution Retina Display, a faster A6X processor as well as an improved rear-facing camera. All of these perks will [...]

iPad maker Foxconn may build first U.S. plant in Detroit or Los Angeles

Foxconn is currently conducting evaluations in Detroit and Los Angeles (with others on tap), according to “market watchers” cited by Taiwan-based tech site Digitimes which tracks supply chain manufacturers.

But if the report turns out to be true, it doesn’t necessarily mean Foxconn would be making iPhones or iPads in the U.S. anytime soon. Digitimes says that since Apple's products are “rather complicated” to manufacture, Foxconn is more likely to start by focusing on LCD TV production, which can be highly automated and easier.

Apple’s Tim Cook is on record as saying he would like iPhones and iPads to be made in the U.S., but [...]

It’s official: Apple unwraps the iPhone 5

The advanced technology in the iPhone 5 shows a strong move forward for Apple’s best-selling device, answering critics who called the iPhone 4S released last year more of an incremental upgrade to earlier models.

The iPhone 5 sports a bigger, 4-inch Retina Display that’s 1136 x 640 resolution. The phone itself is 18% thinner than the iPhone 4.

A new Apple-designed A6 chip that’s twice as fast as the earlier A5 powers the iPhone 5 and Apple exec Phil Schiller says graphics are twice as fast too.

Apple's digital assitant Siri has been updated. In a demo Apple exec Scott Forstall asks Siri to recommend the best movies. Siri answers that [...]

Apple set to spend $45 billion on stock repurchase, dividends program

Shareholders have asked Apple to consider a dividend for some time as the company's huge profits allowed it to sock away a cash horde that now totals near $100 billion. The quarterly dividend announced by CEO Tim Cook will start at $2.65 per share sometime in Apple’s 2012 fourth quarter which starts July 1.

Apple also said its board of directors has authorized a $10 billion share repurchase program that will start in the company’s fiscal 2013, which begins on September 30, 2012.

But with plenty of funds still available, Cook was quick to point out that the new program won’t change how the iPad maker does [...]

Inside the iPad factory: Nightline’s report on Foxconn

That was one of the insights in last night’s half-hour report by Nightline on Foxconn, the Chinese company that manufacturers the iPhone, iPad and numerous other consumer electronics.

To be sure, any number of components in Apple’s devices are produced using the latest automated manufacturing, but an interesting tidbit from Nightline’s report is the manual labor involved in producing the iPad.

The Verge highlighted several items of note in the report including that it takes 141 steps to make an iPhone and It takes five days and 325 hands to make a single iPad.

As for components, Foxconn is busy [...]
