Yahoo continues mobile push by buying iPhone video app Qwiki

Citing sources close to the firm, tech blog All Things D reveals that Qwiki’s app will live on with Yahoo and says that its employees are to move to Yahoo’s New York offices.

You can use Qwiki, which has previously had an iPad app and which plans to launch on Android in the future, to bring together media on your iPhone’s camera roll with iTunes songs. You can also add filters and edit captions for each video, which can be up to a minute long.

Windows 8.1 search results will start showing ads from Bing

The Windows 8.1 Smart Search expands on the Windows 8 search feature by digging results across a variety of sources, including your PC or tablet, your apps, your SkyDrive cloud storage, and the Web. Results are also grouped together, making them more easily accessible than they are in Windows 8.

"Now, with a single campaign setup, advertisers can connect with consumers across Bing, Yahoo, and the new Windows Search with highly relevant ads for their search queries," said David Pann, GM of Microsoft's Advertising Search Group, in a blog post today.

Tumblr’s other big news – updates iOS app with one-click interface.

The update brings a new interface for posting content. The post options appear as colorful icons designed to make it easier to post items with a single click.

You have access to a variety of one-click posting tools including: video, chats, links, quotes, photos and text.

The new method is quicker than the previous method of posting which required you to hit Tumblr's compose button, which then opened a new window of icons.

The update also includes a way to attribute app sources in posts that are shared on Tumblr.

The timing of the release seems unrelated to Yahoo’s big announcement, though it underscores a commitment to mobile that both companies [...]

Paid search ad spending on Google dips overall, but tablets a bright spot

For example, search engine marketers spent more on advertising in Q1 to run ads on smartphone and tablet devices, says digital marketing agency IgnitionOne, which compiled the report. Spending on both devices rose nearly equal amounts, with tablets up 112% and smartphones up 113% from last year. That growth came at the expense of money spent on trying to reach desktop users.

Impressions on tablets rose 129%, and clicks 79%, while smartphones rose 27% and 25%, respectively in the quarter. On average, tablet users spent 17% more time on sites and had 9% higher engagement scores. IgnitionOne uses engagement as part of their scoring system that measures behavior and propensity to [...]

SoundBender accessory for iPad gets pitched on Shark Tank

The show features several tech investors including Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks NBA team. Cuban made his initial fortune selling his video site, Broadcast.com, to Yahoo for $5.7 billion back in 1999 and has since invested in and started a number of other high tech ventures.

Entrepreneurs invited to participate on Shark Tank typically pitch their products in exchange for an ownership stake, though sometimes they win a royalty deal. But the panel is known for asking probing questions and giving sharp-tongued critiques along the way. They often reject some of the pitches out of hand, especially if the company or startup hasn’t already [...]
