Who needs Office? Free Quickoffice iPad app comes to Google Apps for Business users

December 20, 2012

Announcing the news via its Google Enterprise blog, the search giant said that the app is available to download from the App Store and lets users view, edit and create Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (’97-’10) files, with these able to be saved to the cloud using Google Drive.

iPhone and Android versions are “on the way”, Google says, while Quickoffice’s Pro HD app is still available at $7.99.

Google acquired Quickoffice in June and has since utilized the mobile productivity firm's technology to better convert Word, Excel and PowerPoint files into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

The launch of the new Quickoffice iPad app could certainly be seen as a move by Google to compete with Windows 8 tablets and, more specifically, Microsoft Office.

Office has long been rumored to be coming to the iPad, but a spat between Microsoft and Apple over App Store fees could well delay its introduction.
