Citing industry sources, Taiwanese news website Digitimes reports that numerous China-based smartphone vendors, including Huawei, Lenovo, Xiaomi Technology and ZTE, will step up their tablet plans later in the year.

The website claims that Huawei intends to launch a new 7-inch tablet in the third quarter of 2013 and expects the firm to aim for some bold shipment figures. Along with the 10.1-inch model released earlier this year, Huawei is apparently sourcing two million displays from local OEM Truly Opto-electronics and is also expected to buy some tablets displays from Innolux.

Lenovo is another vendor with active plans in the tablet market and will supposedly debut its recently-announced Miix,  a 10.1-inch Windows 8 tablet with an Intel Atom CPU, in Q3.

But perhaps most interesting of all is the speculation that Xiaomi, a three-year-old start-up which has tended to sell low-end smartphones, could unveil its first tablet as early as the middle of next month.

Digitimes’ source didn’t have too many further details on the possible slate but did claim that it will come with a MediaTek processor.
