The entry-level 32GB Surface RT typically retails for $399 but will drop to only $199 as part of a new global discount program for educators, while equipping the same tablet with a Touch or Type Keyboard Cover will cost $249 and $289, respectively.

Microsoft says that the deals are for K-12 schools and universities across the world, but adds that the discounts will only run up until August 31.

This marks Microsoft's second tablet announcement for the education market in less than a week.

The Redmond firm has also revealed that it will give away 10,000 free Surface RT tablets to teachers who attend the International Society for Technology Education Convention, which takes place in San Antonio from June 23 to June 26.

Microsoft's Surface tablets have struggled for significant consumer sales since launch, but they could fare better in education, which will be attracted by the fact that the tablets run Windows RT — the ARM version of Windows 8, come pre-installed with Microsoft Office and feature USB ports.
