Analyst: Record 20 million iPads shipped in Q3, tablet is catching the iPhone

July 13, 2012

Needham & Company analyst Charlie Wolf had originally forecast 13 million iPads to be shipped in Apple’s third quarter, which ended in June, but has since upgraded this forecast to a record-breaking 20 million units after admitting to Apple Insider that his initial prediction had been ‘hastily formulated’.

To put that figure in some context, Apple reportedly shipped 9.25 million iPads in the same quarter last year, and 11.8 million of the tablets in the first quarter of 2012.

However, what was arguably more interesting than the outright figure was Wolf's assertion that increasing iPad demand in business and in China (where the new iPad is due to launch next week) is likely to see iPad shipments overtake iPhone shipments in the near future.

“In our view, it’s only a matter of time before iPad shipments exceed iPhone shipments,” said Wolf. “The iPad is invading the business market at a much faster pace than the iPhone”.

Apple is expected to officially announce its June quarter financial results on July 24. However, as CNET points out however, it is worth noting that Apple tracks the sales figures of the iPad, meaning Wolf’s shipments figure is bound to be slightly higher than what Apple reports.
