If you got a new iPhone or iPad over the holidays, there’s a good chance you went to the iOS App Store to download or buy apps. Today, Apple announced that Sunday, January 1 was the single biggest sales day in the history of the App Store, as it brought in almost $240 million in revenues.
Apple also announced that for the entire year of 2016, App Store developers earned a total of $20 billion, and that’s 40 percent higher compared to 2015. In December 2016 alone, app purchases came in at $3 billion. There are now over 2.2 million apps in the store and that’s up over 20 percent compared to a year ago.
The most downloaded app in the store is not exactly a shock; Niantic Labs’ Pokemon Go augmented reality game claimed the top spot for 2016. However, the launch of Nintendo’s hit side-scroller Super Mario Run reached the top 10 of all iOS app downloaded in 2016, even though it was first released on Dec. 15. It was downloaded 40 million times in its first four days, and Apple said the game was still the most downloaded app worldwide on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. That shows that there is still a ton of interest in Super Mario Run and it hopefully means Nintendo will work harder to launch even more mobile games.
