HTML5 champion The Financial Times gets ready to ditch iOS app

The publisher turned to HTML5, having become disgruntled by the fees and publisher rights demanded by Apple, when submitting applications to the App Store. The FT subsequently saw its web-app user-base overtake that of the iOS version in just three months.  Despite having pulled the iOS app from iTunes halfway through last year, the FT did keep the version running so that subscribers with it already installed could continue to use the application. However, with ever falling user numbers and a number of pressing maintenance issues, paidContent says that the publisher now plans to render the app unusable over the next month. Speaking to New Age Media, Audi’s UK digital marketing manager, Hugh Fletcher, said that smartphones generated 7.5% of the manufacturer’s online traffic, while tablets accounted for a significant 10.5%.
